Annie's Taste

Annie has been with us since the week before Christmas. She's proven to be quite a little character. She likes to bury her toys. Sometimes she hides them and then sits by me and barks. "Do you really think that's how that game is played? I think I'm supposed to hide the toy and you are supposed to go look for it." She used to bury treats but since I bought her dehydrated liver treats, she doesn't do that anymore. She now flatly turns down the other treats. They say dogs are like their owners. I am not known to be a diva or demandig of attention. However, I do have champagne taste and it appears so does my dog. No milkbones for her!
Speaking of her food, she eats a raw food diet. I like to buy meat from Hare Today, Gone Tomorrow. They grind meat, bones, and organs all together. Even skin and fur if you want it. They have a great variety of meats. They also offer treats, eggs, and dairy. There are a lot of other places to buy it. Some ship and others you have to pick it up. I like having it shipped even though the cost of shipping is incredible. The pick-up times are limited and often don't fit my schedule, not to mention my fear of driving in the cities, which is where I'd have to go. When the food is delivered, I just have to thaw some of it and add vegetables, apple cider vinegar, and garlic. I can then refreeze what I won't be using soon. Annie loves meal time. The treats she gets right now came from Dr. Mercola's website. Since I have never bought treats from Hare Today, I don't know how these compare but I intend to buy from both. Why do I feed her this way? Because it makes her feel good. When she came here, had been fed Iams dry dog food and she had dry fur and worms. Now she is worm-free and her fur is very soft and shiny. The apple cider vinegar and garlic keep the internal and external parasites away. Eating the way she was meant to eat keeps her feeling good and healthy. It has a direct affect on behavior, too. She is calmer and less likely to be aggressive. She will also have many fewer health problems. So this way of feeding is expensive but well worth it.
One thing that drives my mom crazy is Annie's wardrobe. Yes, she has one. Right now it consists of a winter coat (in northwestern Wisconsin, she needs one), 3 sweaters, a dress, and a Halloween costume. I have 2 or 3 more dresses coming. I buy them from PPE Pet Supplies because there have great discounts on their closeout page. Dog apparel that is regularly up to $25 is reduced to $2-5 . They have toys, grooming supplies, and lots of other things. I'm not a quality expert but I do like what I've gotten so far. And Annie does not resist or try to take anything off. She appears to like to wear her clothes. She even poses for me when I take pictures as you can see above.
As you can see, I am devoted to Annie. She gets good quality food and treats, a cute wardrobe, and is on her way to being the best trained dog in the county!

Introducing Annie

This is Annie, a rescue from a Minnesota shelter. This is the picture the shelter posted on their website and the one that stole my heart immediately. I went out on a financial limb and it took several paychecks to recover but it was very worth it. Annie is a 1-1/2-year-old, 7-pound papi-poo and quite a little character. She's very smart, too. She was with my mom one afternoon when my son, Andrew, called from Alaska. Annie barked for attention but was not getting the results she wanted. Her eyes followed the phone cord from the wall to Mom's ear and then she bite the cord right in the middle. Now I have to buy a new cord.

Annie is a very active dog. She needs lots of attention and exercise. Her favorite game is fetch. And when she plays, she teases. If there is more than one person, she alternates throwers. She also likes to put the ball down out of reach and bark til I, or someone, picks it up and throws it again. If I persist, she will pick it up and bring it closer. I love fetch. However, it seems to take a LOT of fetch to wear her out. This spring, I'm taking her to obedience training. When she came here, she knew "sit". Now she knows "down". I'm working on "shake" and "sit pretty". I want her to earn a Canine Good Citizen certificate and go into therapy. In the mean time, I am going to start teaching her agility. This is the kind of thing she needs to wear her out! And I need to lose a few pounds too! There are a few things I can use around here to start until we get the equipment built. By then she will have learned enough to start putting it into practice.

I am starting Annie's blog to show how great shelter dogs can be. It's the first place I go when I want to adopt any kind of animal. It may not always work out but it's a great place to start for a great pet. Tortoises and rabbits will be my next shelter adoptees. For now, I'm having a great time with Annie. And this is her journey.
